Part I is written for Oracle Trace users who want to set up data collection using the Oracle Trace Manager application, the graphical user interface for Oracle Trace. Users of Part I should be familiar with database terminology.
Part II is written for application developers who want to add Oracle Trace service routines to their own applications, for the purpose of collecting performance data. Developers using Part II should be familiar with programming terminology, in particular C++.

Chapter 5, Instrumentation Guidelines
Discusses the issues you should consider when instrumenting an application. It also briefly describes the instrumentation process.
Describes the Oracle Trace method for passing data between products to provide better understanding of the context in which events occur.
Explains what product definitions are, why they are necessary, and how to create them.
Provides information about the correct way to call Oracle Trace routines. It also provides a complete description of each routine.
Describes the events that have been added to the Oracle Server for Oracle Trace data collection.
Describes the events that have been added to SQL*Net for Oracle Trace data collection.
Describes the format of the database that Oracle Trace creates.
Provides a sample application that shows various calls to Oracle Trace routines.
Conventions Used in This Guide
Table 1 lists the conventions used in the guide.
This guide also assumes that you are familiar with the operation of Microsoft Windows NT. Refer to the Windows documentation for your system, if necessary.
